Cave City, Kentucky
A really cool destination for a weekend trip (or longer) is Cave City Kentucky. Weve been there a few times and it is such a fun and relaxing place to visit. If it sounds familiar, it is the town where Mammoth Cave National Park is located. There are several caves to explore in the area, each of which has its own personality. If you have time, the more of them you can see the better. No two are alike and the best part is that if the weather is too hot or cold outside, its always the same predictable temperature in the caves.
Other cool things to see and do in the area include:
Dinosaur Park – Hundreds of life-size dinosaurs in a pleasant shaded loop
Kentucky Down Under Adventure Zoo – where you can walk amongst and pet real kangaroos! What?!
Mammoth Valley Park – An outdoor park featuring ziplines and an alpine slide!
And at Christmas there is a reindeer farm about 45 min away
...plus a lot more. See the links at the bottom.
Some attractions are only open certain seasons and certain days of the week sure to check before you go.
When you stay there are several truly unique places to choose from. For a traditional Route 66 feel there is Wigwam #2. This is one of the original teepee shaped motels. Fan of the Disney movie, Cars?" The Cozy Cones Motel is inspired by these novelty roadside wigwams. Though they may look like a large canvas teepee, they are actually concrete structures with electricity and even a full bathroom! Most nights the owner builds a fire in the common area and you have a chance to converse with other guests from around the country while the kids play together on the playground. It is truly a trip back in time.
Just an exit down the road is the Grand Victorian Inn. This old hotel sitting right beside the railroad tracks can trace its history all the way back to 1905. Each room is decorated with furniture from the Victorian era and is such a pleasant place to stay. The owners prepare a delightful breakfast every morning and can tell anything you want to know about the history of the area.
